Free Open Access Publishing Opportunities for Chapman Authors

Information on agreements that allow Chapman University authors to publish open access for free or at reduced costs in selected journals.

Read-and-publish deal with SPIE

Chapman University is part of a read-and-publish agreement with SPIE for calendar year 2024. This agreement allows Chapman-affiliated authors to publish their articles Open Access in SPIE journals at no cost to themselves.

In other terms, this agreement covers the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Chapman authors whose research articles are accepted for publication in SPIE journals during the agreement.

Please read on for information to determine if your research publication is eligible and to learn how to take advantage of this opportunity.

Is my research eligible?

To be eligible, articles must:

  • Be original research.
  • Have a corresponding author affiliated with Chapman University (i.e. employee, staff, faculty, or current student).
  • Be submitted for publication between January 1-December 31, 2024.
  • Be accepted for publication in one of the below journal titles:
    • Advanced Photonics
    • Advanced Photonics Nexus
    • Journal of Applied Remote Sensing (JARS)
    • Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS)
    • Journal of Biomedical Optics (JBO)
    • Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI)
    • Journal of Medical Imaging (JMI)
    • Journal of Micro/Nanopatterning, Materials, and Metrology
    • Journal of Nanophotonics (JNP)
    • Journal of Optical Microsystems (JOM)
    • Journal of Photonics for Energy (JPE)
    • Neurophotonics (NPh)
    • Optical Engineering (OE)

In addition, Photonics Insights is a Diamond OA journal, which means authors can publish open access in it at no cost.

Submissions to conference proceedings are not included in this agreement.

How to publish Open Access under this agreement

  1. On the "Open Access" page of the submission process, scroll to the bottom where it says "If any author belongs to an institution that has an open access publishing agreement with SPIE, the APC is waived."
    1. Note that our agreement does require that the corresponding author be affiliated with Chapman University.
  2. Click the radio button that says, "One or more authors belong to an institution that has an open access publishing agreement with SPIE (select from list below)."
  3. Select "Chapman University" from the drop-down list of institutions.

Author opt-out is allowed if an author wishes to publish under a subscription/paywall.

OA articles will be published with a Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 license.
