Free Open Access Publishing Opportunities for Chapman Authors

Information on agreements that allow Chapman University authors to publish open access for free or at reduced costs in selected journals.

Read-and-publish deal with IOP

Chapman University, as a member of the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC), is part of a read-and-publish agreement with IOP (Institute of Physics) through 2028. This agreement allows Chapman-affiliated authors to publish their articles Open Access in many IOP journals at no cost to themselves.

In other terms, this agreement covers the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Chapman authors whose research articles are accepted for publication in applicable IOP journals.

Please read on for information to determine if your research publication is eligible and to learn how to take advantage of this opportunity.

Is my research eligible?

To be eligible, articles must:

  • Be primary research (including research papers, special issue articles, letters and review articles) accepted during the term of the agreement.
  • Have a corresponding author affiliated with Chapman University (i.e. faculty, permanent/temporary/visiting researcher, staff, or student).

This agreement will provide APC coverage for a capped number of articles (200 per year across participating institutions) in one of the 58 eligible hybrid titles or 35 eligible fully OA (gold) titles.

  • American Astronomical Society journals are not included, as these are independent and fully OA as of 2022.
  • In 2024, 85 articles were published under this agreement, so it is expected that the cap of 200 articles per year will be sufficient.

How to publish Open Access under this agreement

The process of identifying eligible authors and coordinating open access publication is fairly automated. Author identification is based on an autofill institution list and approval is automatic based on institutional association. However, author opt-out is allowed if an author wishes to publish under a subscription/paywall. OA articles will be published with a Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 license, although ECS titles also have the option for a CC-BY-NC-ND license.
