Chapman University, as a member of the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC), is part of a read-and-publish agreement with Emerald for 2025-2027. This agreement allows Chapman-affiliated authors to publish their articles Open Access in many Emerald journals at no cost to themselves.
In other terms, this agreement covers the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Chapman authors whose research articles are accepted for publication in applicable hybrid Emerald journals during the agreement.
Please read on for information to determine if your research publication is eligible and to learn how to take advantage of this opportunity.
To be eligible, articles must:
This agreement will provide free open access publication for up to 30 articles in 2025, 31 articles in 2026, and 32 articles in 2027 across participating SCELC institutions (including Chapman University). This is greater than the average number of qualifying articles that participating institutions’ corresponding authors published in those journals historically (115% of historical totals). It is possible that we will collectively exceed this cap, but a historical analysis of author OA opt-out rates and other factors makes this unlikely. It is hoped that future agreements will be able to include a higher number of articles and journals.
This agreement also offers eligible authors a 5% discount on the Article Processing Charge (APC) for Emerald's 11 fully open access journal titles, to be paid by the author(s). However, these titles are likely eligible for SOARS awards for full-time faculty authors to cover the remaining 95% of the APC.
Emerald will notify qualifying authors by email about this option upon article acceptance. The author must agree to publish the article with a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.
