Free Open Access Publishing Opportunities for Chapman Authors

Information on agreements that allow Chapman University authors to publish open access for free or at reduced costs in selected journals.

Read-and-publish deal with Oxford University Press

Chapman University, as a member of the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC), is part of a read-and-publish agreement with Oxford University Press (OUP) from February 4, 2025 through December 31, 2028. This agreement allows Chapman-affiliated authors to publish their articles Open Access in many OUP journals at no or reduced costs to themselves.

In other terms, this agreement covers at least part of the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Chapman authors whose research articles are accepted for publication in applicable OUP journals during the agreement.

Please read on for information to determine if your research publication is eligible and to learn how to take advantage of this opportunity.

Is my research eligible?

To be eligible, articles must:

  • Be a research article, review article, case report, or brief report.
  • Be published in one of OUP's140 fully open access journals or 357 hybrid journals covered under the agreement.
    • Several society or subscription-only journals are not included in this agreement (Title list).
  • Have a corresponding author affiliated with Chapman University (i.e. faculty, lecturer, staff, or student).

How to publish Open Access under this agreement

How will corresponding authors from Chapman University learn that they’re eligible to publish open access at no or reduced cost to them?
Eligible authors will be identified based upon their institutional affiliation and walked through the process of applying the agreement upon article acceptance.

Which open access options are available?

Typically, authors may typically choose among several common Creative Commons licenses: CC-BY, CC-BY-NC and CC-BY-NC-ND. Some journals may require a specific CC license.

How do authors take advantage of this opportunity?

The steps for taking advantage of the OUP read-and-publish deal will depend on whether you are publishing in a fully open access journal or a hybrid journal (i.e. one that publishes a mix of toll-access/subscription and open access articles) and whether you have grant funding to cover an APC:

  • Authors submitting to a fully OA (gold) journal: The library agreement will cover the first $750 of the APC. Authors are responsible for covering the rest of the cost.
    • In effect, this works out to a $750 discount for authors choosing to publish in a fully open OUP journal.
    • It is hoped that this discount will increase over time.
    • However, these titles are likely eligible for SOARS awards for full-time faculty authors to cover the remainder of the APC.

  • Authors submitting to a hybrid journal: Funding from the library agreement will depend on whether the author(s) have any grant funding to cover the cost of the APC.
    • The library agreement will cover the full cost of the APC for authors who do not have grant funding to cover it.
    • The library agreement will cover the first $1,000 of the APC for authors who do have grant funding to cover the rest of the cost.
      • The authors will need to cover the rest of the APC from their grant funding. Effectively, this works out to a $1,000 discount on the APC for authors with grant funding.

  • For all articles, APC coverage under this agreement must be manually approved by SCELC, a process that may take a few days. SCELC and OUP are working on a way to automate this process.
