Digital Repositories at Chapman University

Digital Commons and Figshare are open access repositories for sharing and preserving the research outputs of Chapman scholars and researchers.

Data licensing options

All data and accompanying outputs published in Chapman Figshare must be assigned a license before it is published. The chosen license governs what other people may do with the published data. At this time, Creative Commons licenses and some common open software licenses are available on Chapman Figshare. If you would like to use a different license for data in Chapman Figshare, please contact us at LRDS@chapman.edu ahead of submission so we can have the license enabled.

CC-BY is usually the best fit for data being deposited into Chapman Figshare. The full list of CC licenses is:

  • CC-BY-SA 4.0      
  • CC BY-NC 4.0
  • CC-BY-ND 4.0
  • CC BY-NC-SA 4.0
  • CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

Please contact us at LRDS@chapman.edu before selecting a CC-BY-NC or CC-BY-NC-ND license to discuss the need for the more restrictive license, as -NC licenses can have unforeseen consequences on future reuse of the data.

If you are uploading software in the same "item" as data and other file types, CC licenses should not be applied to the entire item. Please indicate in a README or in code headers what the license is for the code, or upload code as a different item and group the code and data together in a collection to get a unified DOI.
