Finding Music Articles

Finding articles from journals, music magazines, and newspapers is best accomplished using databases. The library subscribes to many databases specific to music and the performing arts as well as general subject databases.

Music Index covers a larger time period than either of the previous two indexes listed; consequently, it is absolutely enormous (almost 1.5 million entries) and can be used to find some different materials not covered in other music databases.  Does not contain links to full text articles.

(formerly International Index to Music Periodicals, IIMP) - Proquest Music Periodicals is particularly well suited for research in music education, popular music, and jazz.  Contains many links to full text articles. It provides indexing and abstracts for more than 425 international music periodicals, plus full text for around 140 journals.

(formerly International Index to Performing Arts, IIPA) primarily focuses on performing arts other than music (e.g., theatre, television, dance, etc). It is useful for subjects that cross performing arts disciplines, e.g., music and film, musical theatre, dance music, and popular music.  Contains some links to full text articles from across 395 periodicals.

With over half a million entries, RILM is extremely helpful for finding articles and dissertations on the topics of musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory.  Contains some links to full text articles.
