Getting Started: Library Research Strategy

This guide is intended to help you develop a strategy for conducting research.

Formulating a Thesis Statement

A thesis statement clearly states the main idea or concept of an essay.

Keys to formulating a thesis statement:

  • Focus on one main idea or concept
  • Choose a clear stance on the issue
  • Make it interesting to your audience
  • It may be helpful to divide your thesis statement into two Parts: Main topic (what?) and Comment (what about it?)
  • If needed, revise the thesis statement as your paper develops

Examples:

The current crisis between Israel and Palestine may lead to a major war in the Middle East.

Soccer is a growing sport among youth in the United States.

The civil liberties that American Citizens have enjoyed in the past are decreasing due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

NOTE: Before deciding on a thesis statement, you may need to conduct background research on a topic to better inform yourself. Reference resources can provide useful background information on topics. Also, your librarians are happy to help you locate information.
